Elliott glanced at his watch while Sunny poked his gray old nose around some of the bare bushes. Unfortunately, there had been no snow in which the elderly dog could frolic and -- not -- pop a hip or something. While Elliott might kid about the age and decrepitude and silliness of his canine companion, he still loved the old fart very dearly. So, he was forever patient with the long-haired golden creature, holding the leash with his gloved hands. Thank goodness for layers, even though it wasn't even one of the colder evenings. Standing still for a long time in any sort of weather tends to make it seem more extreme, and Elliott knew he would be stationary for a while. If only there were a darn bench around. It was late morning, and Elliott had plans to go out to lunch (with Sunny, of course -- it would be a date, naturally).
They had been standing near this very same bush for twenty minutes, Elliott counted, and he rather wondered how he was so patient with a dog. Well, because he loved the creature, of course. With a quiet sigh, Elliott gently pulled at the leash to alert Sunny that they should get going. The old dog lifted his head and looked at Elliott with his large, watery brown eyes, pleading for just one more moment. "Sorry, bud. We gotta get going, can't stay out too late again today. I actually think there's some work for me waiting at home that isn't just preparing for a party." Sunny wagged his tail twice, trying another method, but Elliott just shook his head and grinned. "I'm sorry, bro, but we gotta go. We can't stand here forever, I don't care how pretty that lady dog who peed there last week is." Elliott turned to start walking away, and Sunny hopped after him, walking by Elliott's side, swinging his heavy head back and forth with each stride.
Glancing at the sky, Elliott shaded his eyes and frowned slightly. He hoped that it wouldn't rain, since it would probably be closer to sleet at this temperature. It would probably have been to check the weather, as was suggested to him before he left, though Elliott rather let his pride get in the way and simply leave with his eager pet pal. Also, Elliott remembered that he ought to have brought his sunglasses. They would have been preferable, and also maybe some music... But, alas, no time to think about what he had forgotten back home, and all the time to think about where he wanted to go to lunch. Of course, he'd probably just wander downtown and see what he felt like. All his life, he'd been going to places with Sunny, just sitting outside and eating or giving him some water, or what have you, and he'd never run into any real trouble.
Suddenly, Sunny halted again, nearly tripping Elliott with his heavy old body. He was panting and wagging his tail, his tongue lolling from his gaping mouth and a thick strand of drool drooping from one side. Automatically fixing himself and returning to his exquisite posture and composure, Elliott followed his dog's gaze to see what was up.
